All Physicians Lead

Redefining Physician Leadership For Better Patient Outcomes

All physicians are leaders. They show up as leaders on the job every day. They might not realize it, but it’s true. Physicians are leading from day one. Whether it’s influencing the behaviors of their team or trying to convince a patient to change their habits, physicians are constantly navigating leadership events.

The challenge Dr. Leon Moores addresses in his book All Physicians Lead is our current connotation that “physician leader” means only physicians in named, recognized leadership positions. This results in years of missed opportunities for leadership skills reflection, feedback, and training. “Physicians should be trained in leadership as a core competency from the start of medical school, during their residencies, and throughout their entire careers,” Moores says. “When all physicians become better leaders, the healthcare system works better for everyone.”

Leon’s perspective is shaped by his own experiences as a physician leader and the leadership principles instilled in him during his military service. Writing primarily to help doctors view themselves as leaders, his work empowers physicians to embrace this mindset shift. “Something profound happens,” Moores says. “You begin to see the connection between your leadership skills and the outcomes you are seeking—high-performance teamwork, lower-stress work environments, and better patient care. You begin to realize that you are a crucial vehicle of transformation, in every position you hold, at every level of your career.”

All Physicians Lead is also relevant for anyone involved in the hiring, training, and education of physicians. In a collegial and convincing way, Leon’s work aims to unite the medical profession and those touched by it to rethink how we define physician leadership and act on it. Leadership can be learned, but if we don’t recognize we are leading and how consequential our leadership is we lose the opportunity to reflect with the intent to improve.

The results can be significant. Imagine a day when medical schools teach leadership skill alongside clinical training, residents and fellows are constantly assessing their ability to influence behavior to achieve a desired result, and practicing physicians recognize the impact of their leadership efforts and constantly improve upon them. There is little doubt the resultant increased efficiency, effectiveness, and mission focus of healthcare teams combined with caring, compassionate physician leadership directed toward patients and families will drive better patient outcomes.

“Fascinating. In All Physicians Lead, Dr Leon Moores refutes the concept that the surgeon operating on you is simply a highly skilled technician. The West Point graduate and paratrooper-turned-medical doctor argues persuasively that physicians must be effective leaders who shape our healthcare experience on almost every level, and that our institutions must reflect this requirement. More than a leadership handbook, it is an invaluable roadmap.”
